The new defense industrial base

For decades, the defense industry has been built around long development cycles, specialized factories and relatively small production runs. A new generation of companies is challenging that model.

The basic idea is simple: military technology needs to move faster.

Companies such as Anduril, Firestorm Labs and Castelion are approaching defense manufacturing with a different philosophy. Mach Industries says its Forge network of decentralized, rapidly retoolable factories is built on the same idea. Instead of treating every program as a once-in-a-generation engineering effort, they are borrowing ideas from the commercial technology industry — rapid iteration, vertical integration and aggressive testing.

That matters because a weapon that exists only as a prototype has limited military value. The ability to manufacture that system repeatedly can be just as important as the technology itself.

Anduril has invested heavily in automated production and its Arsenal manufacturing architecture. Firestorm Labs is pursuing rapidly deployable drone manufacturing. Castelion is applying a high-speed development model to hypersonic weapons.

The common thread is production.

A military may have the world’s most advanced aircraft, missile or drone. But if it takes years to replace a lost system, the advantage can disappear quickly in a major conflict.

Affordable systems change that equation. Instead of building a small number of exquisite platforms, manufacturers can potentially produce larger quantities, test them in the field and rapidly improve the next version.

That creates a feedback loop between the factory and the battlefield.

The future defense company may therefore look less like a traditional contractor and more like a technology company with a factory attached.

The factory is the weapon

The next generation of defense companies isn’t only competing to build better weapons. They’re competing to build them faster.

Rapid prototyping, automated manufacturing and software-driven production are changing how military hardware gets designed and produced.
